New Government Not So Lenient on Online Casinos
General opinion seems to agree that the British government has an entirely
different position on online casino and land-based gambling in the country. The
former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, was responsible for a surge in internet and
land-based companies servicing the UK, but now that the new Prime Minister is
beginning to weigh in on the previously approved issues, he may just turn the
country back around. Though Brown is not against online casinos inherently, he
did comment unfavorably recently on the Manchester supercasino.
And now the British government may change its mind about online casino and
internet betting advertisements as well. Regulations in the UK are fairly
lenient as of now, but the Culture Secretary, James Purnell is apparently more a
fan of a stricter Code of Conduct than the gambling industry is supporting.
Specific discussions of relevance are the alleged secret talks between the
British Department of Culture Media, and Sport (DCMS) and the various online
casino and land-based gambling companies. Right now the betting industry makes
bank with the advertisements during sports shows and events. But if the
allegations are correct, the DCMS is pushing for a much more regulated
advertisement structure. For example, online casinos and betting companies would
not be able to run advertisements before 9pm. This is a major concern for the
betting companies as sporting event advertising is lucrative and now would be
out of the question.
Only time will tell just how far the new Prime Minister will go to scale back
the previously approved legislation regarding land-based and online casinos and
gambling companies, but in the past couple of months all signs are pointing to
the fact that the PM plans at least some changes.
