Support Still Growing for Frank
The Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement (IGREA) is gaining a large
political following as more and more state representatives support the concept
of licensing and regulating the online casino industry rather than the current
ban. IGREA has a lot of grassroots support from players who simply want the
freedom to gamble in the privacy of their own homes. And though the Christian
right has recently begun a campaign against all bills (particularly Frank’s
IGREA) that would neutralize the online casinos ban, other sectors and groups
are stepping up to the plate and voicing their support.
Just last week the New York Post’s op-ed section included a piece that blatantly
supported the concept of regulation rather than the current ban. The article
focus on the idea that the U.S. Treasury Department has much more important
tasks to concern themselves with than online casinos gambling. The Treasury
takes care of issues ranging from the investigation of counterfeit money to
tracking terrorist financing – and now of course add to that investigating U.S.
players gambling from their homes. The Post’s position trivialized the UIGEA and
actively supported Barney Frank’s IGREA.
The article, “Web Gambling - tax it, don't ban it," when compared to the recent
NFL and Christian right’s open opposition to neutralizing the online casino ban,
shows how polarized the U.S. is on this one issue. Democratic Representative
Steve Israel and Long Island Republican Peter King wrote the op-ed piece with
the hopes of shedding more light on this controversial issue for many who are
currently unaware of the political and international divide that the UIGEA has
created.
