Outlawing Online Casinos in Turkey
New legislation in Turkey could mean no online casinos, and definitely no online
gaming for an Turkish citizens. Their newest law seeks to fine and possible
imprison anyone offering online gambling services to Turks. But others are
concerned that this latest law could hamper their current efforts to join the
European Union. Because the ban is so restrictive on outside countries allowing
Turkish gambling, some fear that the EU will question their impending membership
into the union.
This new law that addresses online casino gambling is known as the “Law for
amending certain articles of the law on bookmaking organisation concerning
football contests” in a rough English translation of the Turkish law.
Specifically, it seems that the law is focusing on companies residing outside of
Turkey. Because of the wording of the law there is current speculation that
Turkey is considering allowing some licensed companies or specific online casino
Web sites to op erate with Turkish citizens.
But others are not surprised by this latest law, as they were predicting that
this was in the works based on the company’s attitude toward online casino
gambling. Some companies, like Bwin (an Austrian company involved in the
gambling industry), were concerned about the strong anti-gambling sentiments
expressed lately from Turkey.
But with online casino gambling on the rise in Europe, the fact that Turkey is
applying for membership into the EU could be the strongest turning point for
online gambling. The fact is, part of the deal with joining the EU is that
the counties then have open border policies—and that means banning foreign
companies just doesn’t look so good right now.
