Online Gambling in Malta
Organizations in Malta are now calling for gambling awareness advertisements in
the media because to ease gambling addictions and counter-act the ease of online
casino gambling. A recent study conducted by Agenzija Sedqua in Malta shows that
there doesn’t seem to be a large online gambling problem among the young Maltese
adults, and organizations like Sedqua want to ensure that this age group stays
away from the online casinos.
The recent lifestyle study was a joint effort between Sedqua and the National
Focal Point for drugs and Drug Addiction. Part of the aim of the study was to
determine the extent of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and other dependencies in the
18-24 age range. The results of the study were surprising, though more than half
of the respondents admitted to engaging in some form of gambling (lottery, Keno,
scratch cards, etc.) a mere 2 percent of the respondents use online casinos.
This organization is particularly concerned with the rise in online gambling in
other countries, and the extreme negative effects online casinos addictions
could have on Malta citizens. The operations director of Sedqua, Jean-Claude
Cardona, explains the problems with online casinos. “Internet gambling is easily
accessible and there are no physical deterrents that might put a person off
gambling.” He continued, "All a person has to do is sit at his computer and
access the site, putting him at a higher risk of becoming asocial." Cardona goes
on to elaborate that in the future he predicts that online gambling and online
casinos will become even more invasive, “experts predict that gambling will
eventually be done through interaction with television.”
But thanks to Sedqua, Cardona says that the government has agreed to more
regulations, particularly in regards to online casinos licensing. This is just
one part of Sedqua’s mission to counter the negative effects that online
gambling has in Malta. They also are pushing for more counseling, and more
social workers available to citizens with gambling additions.
