Changes Brewing in Congress Over Online Casinos
In the online gambling community, there is much debate over the Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). This Act passed through Congress just
last year, and has spurred great controversy over the government’s right to
decide how US citizens spend their money. The UIGEA functions primarily as
through the financial institutions in the US. Basically, financial institutions
are prohibited from accepting any transactions that involve any online casinos
based out of the United States, or any United States based internet gambling
companies.
But all of this could be looking up soon because of some recent additions to US
Congress. Several of the new Democrats in Congress are rumored to be
“casino-friendly.” Many in the online casino industry believe these new
Democrats on Congress could alter the way the US enforces the UIGEA.
Ideally it seems that many are pushing for state control over online casinos and
internet gambling. Right now, many states already have control over online
horse-race betting, so it makes logical sense that they also have the right to
decide whether their state residents have the right to gamble online. So though
the citizens feel the ban on online casino gambling is unfair, the real issue
that could turn this all around is the issue of states rights.
