Swedish Online Casinos Doing Well

Despite the controversy over Sweden’s government-run online casino, gambling, and betting company, Svenska Spel, the country is reporting surges in internet gambling and betting activities. A Swedish radio station, Sveriges Radio International, recently reported that not only has the amount of money Swedes are betting increased significantly, but more Swedes are joining the trend and gambling at the online casinos.

Svenska Spel is the only option that Swedes have for legalized gambling in the country, but that monopoly does not seem to stop them from logging onto the Web sites to place bets and download the popular online casino games. Though gambling is not particularly new in Scandinavia, the increase in internet and online casinos gambling has occurred fairly recently. The SRI station reported that Svenska Spel expects a 40 percent increase in the amount of money Swedes are gambling at the sites. Similarly, on the sports gambling side of the industry, ATG announced that it has already experienced a 30 percent increase in internet based betting activities from the first half of 2007.

The increase in betting across Sweden is, in part, due to the increase in gambling options. Never before have Swedes had so many choices. Betting sites now offer a variety of sports betting and horserace betting, online casinos have expanded game inventories and frequently update to offer cutting edge games and technology, and newly emerging gambling mediums such as internet bingo. Then add to that the growing trend across Scandinavia such as heavy gambling based advertising, live coverage of sporting events and races, and intense competition at the online casino gambling companies, and internet gambling and betting is emerging as one of the most popular and lucrative industries.
