Patented Online Casino Technologies
Competition in the online casino industry is fierce, and it gets even tougher
when some companies in the industry disregard patented technology and software.
1st Technology has spent many months in court recently with the Bodog online
casinos, and previously with other gambling groups that infringed on 1st
Technology’s patents. Copyright infringement is a serious problem for 1st
Technology and the lawsuits are a surefire way for the company to ensure that
internet gambling company’s are licensing the technology from 1st Technology
rather than stealing.
Previous lawsuits against online casinos and other gambling related companies
have proven successful in encouraging companies to license the technology. A few
previous headline cases that 1st Technology has won include the 2005 patent
litigation with SportingBet, Paradise Poker, NDS Group Plc and Orbis Technology.
In each of these cases 1st Technology was able to secure licenses as a means to
settle the litigation.
And though this has proven successful for 1st Technology in the past, patent
litigation with the Bodog online casino Gambling Group has not gone nearly as
successfully. Not only have representatives for Bogod failed to show up for any
of the scheduled US court dates, but the company refuses to pay the $48.6
million in damages (a default judgement) that the judge awarded to 1st
Technology. The process is costing 1st Technology millions, and a lawyer for the
company, Kristopher Rath, notes that 1st Technology "continues to suffer massive
and irreparable harm because of the Bodog entities' wrongful conduct…the only
way to stop this harm is to enjoin Bodog's United States activities." Also, "The
Bodog entities infringing activities are responsible for over $65 billion in
cumulative transactions to date, with approximately two-thirds of this revenue
currently being derived from infringing United States activities."
