Where are the U.S. Online Casino and Poker Industries
Heading
Las Fall the United States passed the Unlawful Internet Enforcement Act through
Congress even though the Act was a last minute addition, and had no outlined
plan for how to implement the restrictions the Act placed on U.S. based online
casinos and financial institutions. Because of this, the Department of Justice,
and the Attorney General were given a deadline for providing the financial
institutions with the specific restrictions. And now the deadline is less than
two months away, and the industry is eagerly (or perhaps anxiously) waiting on
the specifics.
Even though many (and most) online casinos have left the U.S. market, there are
still a few online poker Web sites still allowing U.S. gamblers, but once the
restrictions are announced, there is the possibility that all forms of online
casino and poker gambling are completely eradicated from the U.S.
Senator Kyl is primarily responsible for the anti-online casino gambling
legislation, and even though new Acts and regulations are before Congress, Kyl
stands firm that the UIGEA should stay, and that the U.S. should do whatever
steps it takes to completely end internet gambling in the states. Kyl is
frequently shown vocally supporting the legislation, and the upcoming
regulations. He also recently announced on C-Span that he feels that the U.S.
will be best served if Attorney General Gonzales and the Department of Justice
actively collaborate on the banking restrictions.
