Korea Stops Illegal Online Casinos According to a recent article in the Korea Times, it seems that illegal online casino gambling sites have increased exponentially in the last two years. Lately, internet gambling Web sites are basing their servers outside of Korea as a way to avoid Korean legislation, yet they are targeting their online casinos at the Korean population. The Korea Internet Safety Commission is currently seeking tactics that will effectively block foreign based gambling companies.
The problem Korean government really began to step in and monitor the online casino gambling situation after a scandal broke out late last year regarding illegal offline slot machines. The government ending up seizing thousands of the illegal machines—at that point they began to heavily enforce all of the country’s gambling regulations, including online casino legislation.
The first step for the Safety Commission has been to request that the internet service providers (ISP) block the online casinos at that level. But that won’t solve the long term problem since the internet gambling companies will then just take their servers to the United States and Canada, and still offer the same type of online casino sites target at Koreans, in the Korean language.
An official at the Safety Commission commented, “Illegal gambling sites based on foreign havens began to sprout up en masse late last year when an offline gambling scandal erupted. We will continue to make efforts to block illegal gambling sites, which lure Korean people, in collaboration with local Internet firms.”
So basically the Korean government is stuck in the same conundrum that the U.S. is working through: how do you develop a system that effectively blocks out all of the unwanted online casino sites.
