Stopping Spyware and Adware For heavy internet users, pop-ups are simply accepted most of the time. Even with some of the most efficient Web browsers, some sites are still able to sneak in those unwanted pop-ups. And it isn’t just the “bad” Web sites that send pop-ups and sypyware to computers, Web sites that consumers would never suspect are now being targeted by New York’s Attorney General, Elliot Spitzer. Many believe that online casinos and other gambling sites are top offenders, but in reality, Spitzer is currently investigating and prosecuting Direct Revenue and the company’s affiliated Web sites.
It’s sites like Direct Revenue that get online casinos and other honest sites a bad reputation. Spyware is a severe problem that no self-respecting online casino would stoop to because they want to keep their player-base, and quite honestly, the internet gambling sites make enough revenue from the gambling to not have to succumb to spyware and adware. But Spitzer has aggressively pursued stopping operations at Direct Revenue until the company alters the downloads to not include the malicious and sometimes impossible to get rid off spyware.
Spitzer commented on why he pursues the companies guilty of secret spyware installation, "These applications are deceptive and unfair to consumers, bad for businesses that rely on efficient networks to do their jobs, and bad for online retailers that need consumers to trust and enjoy their online experience." That is a primary reason why the online casinos are largely not a part of this malicious spyware problem.
Spitzer has already shown success in stopping the top spyware offenders, Intermix Media Inc. is based out of Los Angeles, and last year Spitzer’s actions led to the company owing $750,000 in fines because of secret spyware installations.
