Impact of UIGEA on Long-Term Gambling Revenue

Industry analysts are predicting some definite changes in the structure and revenue of U.S. based gambling. Key areas in the study are locations like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, current gambling Meccas in the United States so far not negatively effected by the ban on online casino transactions. The PricewaterhouseCoopers audit group just released global gambling revenue figures that point to a global increase in gambling revenue in the next five years. But when they broke down the increase by region, figures indicate that parts of the U.S. will actually decrease annually in reported gambling revenue.

The 2006 act that effectively ended the transactions between online casinos and financial institutions caused quite a stir in the internet gambling communities, but had a relatively small actual effect on the other gambling sectors like land-based casino gambling. The land-based casinos are actually increasing across the United States as more and more states legalize both slot machines and table gaming. While this points to a greater amount of revenue coming in, which is in fact the case, the gambling centers in the U.S. (Las Vegas and Atlantic City) are suffering.

In Atlantic City for example, the auditing group noted that Atlantic City will slip 0.1 percent primarily because of the legalized slot machines in neighboring Pennsylvania. But that doesn’t mean that the drop is anticipated for all of the land-based gambling revenue. Las Vegas is currently growing and is expected to show a 7.5 percent annual increase. The auditing group did not quote any figures for the online casinos industry because the activity has been phased out as much as possibly. In fact, U.S. citizens continue to gamble at online casinos but the revenues go to the foreign based countries that have found a way around the U.S. restrictions.

Overall, the U.S. gambling revenue is growing steadily each year if it follows the group’s predictions. Total United States revenue is anticipated to reach $79.6 billion by 2011 – a 6.7 percent annual increase.
