IGREA Legislation Needs Support

Alternative legislation to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) that effectively ended online casinos in the United States that offered services to U.S. citizens is a hot topic. Just last week Congressman Barney Frank began his official campaign for HR2046 Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA), and press coverage and media response is positive at this point toward the suggestion for regulating online casinos – so now most are wondering where the Congressman plans to go from here.

IGREA has quickly gained support since Frank first announced the new bill. Basically, the bill calls for re-instating online casinos gambling in the United States through a licensing process. That way the government can regulate and tax the industry and avoid the problems UIGEA supporters claim were rampant before the UIGEA passed last October.

Frank has not yet presented HR2046 to the U.S. House, and according to Frank, he plans to continue gaining wide support for the bill before proceeding to the House. To that end, the Frank’s press aide, Steve Adamske, commented on how Americans can help the online casinos regulations bill come a step closer to passage in the House. He says, "The success of this legislation all depends on people out there in America contacting their members of Congress to increase support for this. The more support we have, the better off we will be."

Americans are not the only ones supporting the bill though. In fact, Frank’s bill already has the support of 22 fellow politicians. And a significant debate for IGREA is this: some of the politicians who voted for the UIGEA have switched viewpoints and are now in favor of regulating the online casinos industry.
