Costa Rica Joins the List

For the most part the Costa Rican government has laid-low on the topic of the U.S. Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and hasn’t been a huge contender in pressuring the U.S. to comply with WTO rulings. But just recently it looks as though Oscar Arias is stepping away from some of the huge problems Costa Rica has faced to acknowledge that the online casinos ban in the U.S. had a very negative effect on high-paying jobs in the country.

Arias has faced many issue more pressing than online casinos legislation, including tackling country wide problems like severe cocaine trafficking, wide-spread corruption, and illegal immigration. But as the deadline nears for countries to submit a request for compensation to the WTO, Arias indicated that Costa Rica is in fact joining the other countries who have already stepped up to the plate. Antigua and Barbuda are tops on the list of countries claiming damages, then the European Union (all 27 countries), Japan, and India – and now Costa Rica. The deadline is still a ways off, but most anticipate that more countries will seek compensation before the deadline.

According to those in the country, with the ban on online casinos and any foreign based gambling including sports betting firmly in place, the restrictions have caused many problems in San Jose including weakening the economy and massive job losses for many Costa Ricans.
