Study into Online Casino Behavior

The Bwin Group, based out of Austria participated with Harvard researchers for over two years now to study the actual behaviors that internet gamblers display when betting and gambling at Bwin online casinos and sites. The study was designed to specifically look at behaviors that may point out problem gamblers and give early indications to gambling operators. Now that the first phase of the study has resulted in some impressive findings, Bwin and Harvard hosted a workshop in Vienna to share the results with others in the online casino and gambling industries.

Problematic gambling is only at the infancy stages of understanding, but the workshop did present some really relevant and new information according to participants. Perhaps the most telling revelation of the study shows that problems gamblers really are not in the majority at online casinos. For the most part out of the 40,000 Bwin players that were sampled, the average betting losses were surprisingly low – Euro 33. Only .04 percent of the players studied over the eight month research study showed signs of problem gambling that may mean financial problems as well as aberrant gambling behaviors.

This study is just the beginning and could have a long-term effect on the gambling restrictions and regulations that nations institute as a way to deal with online casino gambling addicts. Geoffrey Godbold is CEO of the industry related GAMcare, and he makes an important observation. Though the study is will allow more effective identification of problem gamblers “at an early stage," he notes that "it is important not to spoil the fun of the majority but rather target the small minority that has problems." Goldbold also applauded Bwin for the working with Harvard on the study into online casino and betting behaviors.

One of the lead researchers on the online casino gambling behavior study, Dr. Howard Shaffer noted the long-term applicability, "This is a landmark project for both the gaming industry and science because we are studying the actual gambling behaviour of a large sample of Internet gamblers for the very first time. I am proud of Bwin for committing to using science as a guide to assuring the welfare of their customers and to advancing the safety of the Internet and new technology."
