Internet Poker Bill Grows Political Support The general consensus in the United States is this: if the U.S. Department of Justice will not budge on the online casino gambling restrictions it is up to the U.S. players and concerned Congressmen to turn the tide and reverse the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act (UIGEA). And in the past few months three new bills have been proposed that would alter or neutralize the UIGEA. Barney Frank’s bill, HR2046, IGREA (Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act) is popular among politicians and has been campaigning for support for months now. Robert Wexler, a Florida Congressman has just recently announced his Skill Game Protection Act (SGPA) and is now campaigning to gain political and public support.
Wexler’s SGPA, though inclusive of all skill gaming, is designed to exclude online casino poker gambling from the UIGEA and thus reopen this industry to the American public. Wexler’s bill does not touch on the online casinos that were also affected by the UIGEA, but he is very vocal in his support of the other two bills that also address the UIGEA, Frank’s IGREA and Shelley Berkley’s bill that proposes a thorough investigation into the industry. Beyond just supporting these two bills, Wexler is speaking out the U.S. public encouraging all Americans who feel that the UIGEA infringes on American civil liberties to contact state congressmen and speak out on behalf of the online casino and gambling industry.
Robert Wexler’s bill is still in beginning stages of gaining support, but he has already announced 11 cosponsors – and as the bill gains momentum Wexler expects the list to grow considerably. The current list of bill supporters:
Gary Ackerman Shelley Berkley Michael Capuano Steve Cohen Alcee Hastings John Larson James Moran Tim Ryan Linda Sanchez Edolphus Towns Anthony Weiner
