IGREA Political Support: 25 Barney Frank is a United States Congressman that openly opposes the current Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Though the UIGEA was passed through last October and effectively banned legal online casino gambling in the U.S., Frank is spearheading an effort to reverse the UIGEA and instead license and regulate the online casinos servicing U.S. players through the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
Since Frank started actively gaining political support, more and more politicians are seeing the folly in the UIGEA and are voicing support for IGREA. According to Frank’s aides, the online casino players and other Americans who are using their voice to write letters and communicate with their state representatives are also encouraging the increasing support. Politicians are re-examining the UIGEA by the request and once they look into the issue, not only does the question of civil liberties arise, but the international online casinos landscape is increasing the pressure on politicians who have yet to take a firm stance on internet gambling in the U.S. So far 27 countries are openly against the U.S.’s ban on offshore online casinos – and the World Trade Organisation.
