U.S. Still Clarifying About the Online Casinos

The World Trade Organisation has announced its trade sanctions for Antigua after the country has spent years in WTO courts protesting the U.S. And now that the small island nation was given permission to disregard U.S. copyrights up to $21 million per year, the U.S. is asking that Antigua put off the retaliatory measures until the United States has firmed up the new trade agreements and worked out new trade options with the EU and other countries that currently have outstanding compensation claims with the U.S.

The United States is still under the impression that if the U.S. alters its online casino and internet gambling obligations under the WTO treaty that was singed over a decade ago, than the WTO’s compensation ruling toward Antigua would no longer be applicable. Amending the previous trade obligations has been on the U.S. agenda for months now, and the U.S. Trade Representatives assert that once the alterations are made, that the other countries will have no valid claims to the U.S. online casinos and internet gambling and betting industry.

Spicer, a USTR notes on the whole online casino gambling related debacle, "We would expect that Antigua would not suspend its WTO commitments to the United States while that process is underway. Once the process of clarifying the US schedule of commitments is complete,” Spicer notes, “any issues in our bilateral dispute with Antigua will be moot, and there will no longer be any basis for suspending WTO commitments." Whether that assertion will actually sit with other nations and the many online casinos that were forced out of the U.S. market is still pretty questionable. Many countries are still shocked that the U.S. is altering trade agreements as a way around paying the amount that the country owes to the other nations affected by the U.S. online casinos gambling ban.
