Piggybacking Illegal and Dangerous

All computer users should understand that “borrowing” a wireless connection from someone else’s broadband connection is illegal. But beyond that, individuals with unsecured or poorly secured networks are essentially setting themselves up for identity theft and other dangerous outcomes. Many online casino users are hyper aware of the issues related to unsecured networks because of the amount of personal data that goes through the internet to establish a players identity. But the warning for wireless network users goes beyond the online casinos industry and issued for all computer users says the London police.

With technological advancements, individuals are also often increasing the potential for illegal activities. There is no denying that wireless networks in the home are especially convenient for laptop users – but not taking the extra step to secure and password protect the wireless network is just lazy and dangerous. Many individuals like to work or play online casinos from various parts of the house, all well and fine if the wireless network is secure.

This issue came to the forefront of discussions recently because of a 39 year old man arrested in West London because he was sitting on the wall of a house using a neighbor’s unsecured wireless connection. Many online casino and non-gamblers may not be aware that “piggybacking” on someone’s wireless network is flat out illegal. According to the both the Computer Misuse Act and the Communications Act, this activity is “unlawful and police will investigate any violation [they] become aware of," says Detective Constable Mark Roberts of the Metropolitan Police.
