No Regulatory Changes for Antigua and Barbuda

As some countries scurry to alter online casino regulations in time to make the UK “white list,” other countries like Antigua and Barbuda are more confident that the UK will approve their regulatory regime. Just last week the Department of Culture, Sports, and Media announced that two countries had made the “white list,” but that Antigua and Barbuda’s application was still under consideration. Online casinos that operate from jurisdictions that did not make the list will not be able to advertise in the UK – but Antigua is not concerned that the UK DCSM has yet to officially add the jurisdiction to the “white list.”

Dr Errol Cort is the Antiguan Minister of Finance and the Economy, and he particularly has expressed that he is unconcerned with the fact that Antigua did not make the “white list” the first time around. Antigua’s policies concerning online casinos is similar to regulations in the UK, and both countries and jurisdictions have similar agendas concerning the future of the internet gambling industry. Like the UK, Antigua takes proactive steps to ensure that online casino companies are proactively socially responsible. Like the UK, Antigua emphasizes player protection through age verification and a move toward programs tailored to help problem gamblers.

James Purnell, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sports, has used the “white list” and the new UK regulations concerning marketing and advertising restrictions to affect change across the entire online casino gambling industry. By rejecting countries with lower standards and regulations, Purnell is hoping to set a minimum standard in the industry for what is acceptable. Already the “white list” has caused the Netherlands Antilles jurisdiction to quickly pass new regulations that will allow them the ability to join the “white list.” Beyond just having the ability to advertise in the UK, the exclusion from the “white list” could take a toll on the number of online casinos willing to license and operate within a jurisdiction, so that provides an added incentive to meet the UK’s standards.
