Newly Proposed Online Casino Regulations Over the past month the South African government has vacillated between regulating the online casino gambling industry in the country or taking steps to eliminate the activity all together. Initial bills proposed new regulations and taxes on the industry, the latest regulations though indicate that the South African government has decided to take a very tough stance on the online casinos industry. The newly proposed law would effect every part of the internet gambling process from the internet gambling sites to the software developers, and everyone in between.
The current National Gambling Act lacks some important regulations to protect the online casino players and the proposed amendments seek to rectify previous oversights. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is pushing the new amendments to the NGA which emphasize a detailed licensing process. Brian Muthwa is the Director of Legal Affairs at the DTI, and he comments, “We have to ensure that all those who are involved in the production and distribution of interactive gaming software and equipment are properly licensed.”
And the like the UK, the new amendments stress a certain amount of social responsibility among the online casino related companies. Specifically, the South African government will license online casinos and software development companies that demonstrate a commitment to socio-economic upliftment among other requirements.
Those in the online casino industry who can expect to be affected by the new proposed regulations should they pass include: software manufactures, equipment distributors, suppliers, gambling operators, any company employing individuals in gambling industry, and more. And this includes those located outside of South Africa – any company with access to the South African online casino gambling market will be required to obtain a license first.
