More Lobbying for the Online Casinos With the online casino ban in the United States market it is no surprise that many groups have begun to lobby the government for alternative legislation to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Already the Poker Player’s Alliance has garnered enough support to lobby hard on the government to neutralize the UIGEA. And now, some in the online casinos industry are a tad surprised that the American Gaming Association has included internet gambling on the list of issues the group lobbies for.
The AGA is a powerful trade group made up of land-based casinos (rather than an online casino poker gambling specific group like the PPA) that have already this year spent U.S. $900,000 on lobbying various issues all concerning gambling legislation in the U.S. Some of the major land-based casinos that are a part of AGA include: MGM Mirage, Harrah’s Entertainment, Bally Technologies Inc., and more.
The AGA focuses on lobbying issues that affect all sectors of the gambling industry, and in this case, their influence could go a long way toward helping the online casino industry neutralize the UIGEA. The UIGEA is not heavily supported in the government right now, so with a little more pressure behind the alternative bills, AGA and PPA could be effective in persuading representatives to back alternative online casino legislation.
In addition to the online casino lobbying, the AGA lobbied the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department. The $900,000 only includes monies spent in the first half of 2007, many anticipate that the lobbying trade group will continue to support the online casinos cause as well as issues affecting the commercial land-based casino gambling industry.
