AI Software Changing the Face of Internet Gambling

As the online casino industry and accompanying technology becomes more sophisticated many governments are finding that effectively controlling the industry and protecting gamblers is becoming increasing possible. Artificial Intelligence software used in Sweden right now is making international news because in the mere two months the software has been used at the country’s online casino gambling site, the results are already proving effective – and more importantly, consistently accurate.

Svenske Spel is the government run online casinos gambling site, and currently the only internet gambling site offering services to Swedish players. In July, Svenske Spel began to run the Spelkoll AI technology on all player accounts registered at Svenske Spel. The software has the ability to mark player accounts with one of three levels corresponding to the players online casino gambling habits. Depending on the player’s level, the internet gambling company alters the interactions with those players. The idea is to identify problem and addictive gamblers as soon as the behavior and betting patterns indicate a possible problem.

A main criticism of the online casinos industry is the fact that many problem gamblers have no identifiable path to recovery and often gamble themselves into serious debt without even leaving their homes. But the Swedish government has actively sought a solution to this international problem within the online casino industry, and addressed the issue in the form of this new AI software. The CEO at Svenska Spel, Jespers Kärrbrink, comments on how the new software works. He says, "By combining behavioural science and psychology with mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and IT we have developed a tool that will sustain the thrill and excitement of gambling and help players to avoid transforming that into an addiction or an unhealthy gambling pattern"
