A Cinematic Look at Gambling No doubt about it, with online casinos, land-based casinos, horse and dog race betting and many other gambling activities expanding all over the world, it was high time that someone took a closer look at the gamblers themselves, their stories and their addictions. Louis Theroux’s latest film airs on the BBC2 and delves into the real-life stories of gamblers who range from die-hard slot machines enthusiasts to the high rollers who gamble thousands of dollars on one hand of cards to those gamblers spending hours on the internet at online casino Web sites.
This film is just the first of many to come this year as Theroux continues to look into the lives of gamblers. In online casino gambling, the high rollers may not get the same type of kick-backs, but online casino gambling is beneficial because of the many bonuses and special offers. But land-based casinos are completely different. For the first film Theroux went to the land-based casinos in Las Vegas to find the true gamblers. He started out at the Hilton Hotel and one sure-fire way to see who has gambled the most money is to look at who gets the freebies from the casino and hotel.
And boy do you earn those freebies and extras the land-based and online casinos give away to top gamblers. The first person Theroux encounters at a land-based casino has the privilege staying in the Hilton’s top suite gratis—all he had to do was gamble away $160,000 each time he visit’s.
Then you have other’s who benefit from their long-term patronage. One retired doctor lost over $4 million at the casino’s slot machines. Then when she lost her husband the hotel went offered to host her husband’s memorial service.
The film though doesn’t only look at the high roller’s losing millions though. Theroux meets up with the typical example of disillusioned gambling enthusiasts—and those exist as a result of the land-based casinos, and as a result of online casino gambling. A pair of gentlemen Theroux meets are down $24,000, and instead of cutting their loses and going home, they are convinced that they can turn around their luck and go home in the green.
This last pair is the perfect example of why gambling is so dangerous, and Theroux ensures the audience sees just how disillusioned the gamblers are. Gambling can be a dangerous addiction because the gamers just don’t know when to stop. And now that gambling on the internet at online casinos expands, gambling is easier and easier. Online casino gambling addicts are so dangerous because they never have to leave the comfort of their home, so they often gamble for longer than they might have if they were at a land-based casino. Addicts always believe that just one more hand of cards will turn their luck around. |
