Online Gambling Isn't Overly Addictive

As far as fad addictions go, some believe that the term internet addiction is merely the latest fad diagnosis. Others, on the other hand, are seriously researching time spent online, and what exactly constitutes a clinical case of internet addiction. The good news though for online casino gamblers—the latest Stanford University does not indicate that online gambling causes internet addiction more than any other online activity.

Though online gambling is in and of itself an addictive activity, internet addicts are more often defined by multiple online activities for hours rather than only playing at online casinos. The average internet user will average about three hours online per day. This time period can include online casino gambling, as well as communication (email, chatting, blogging, etc.), and other activities.

Stanford University conducted the first real study on internet addiction, and it is this study that spells out the fine line between normal internet consumption and addiction. The researchers did not use a particularly large subject base in the first study conducted in 2005. A second follow-up study was then performed in 2006 after the world proved interested in learning more about internet addiction.

Elias Aboujaoude is a psychiatrist and director of the Impulse Control Disorders Clinic at Stanford; he is also the lead study author. He commented on the results of the study: “The internet problem is still in its infancy. [Internet addicts are] online in chat rooms, checking email every two minutes, blogs. It really runs the gamut. [The problem is] not limited to porn or gambling websites.”

Aboujaoude’s interpretation of the study results makes many in the online casino gambling industry breath a large sigh of relief. This is one more point for their side of the debate that internet gambling and online casinos are not the root of evil though the U.S. government seems to stress this fact and cite online casino gambling addiction as the reason for the recent act banning online gambling financial transactions in the U.S.

Dr Ivan Goldberg is a psychiatrist practicing in New York, and had the following to say about the perceive internet addiction. “There’s no question that there are people who are seriously in trouble because of the fact that they’re overdoing their internet involvement.” Goldberg however, goes on to state that perhaps the more appropriate term for excessive internet use is terming it a disorder rather than an true addiction.
